Skin, Nail, and Hair Problems
Our skin, nails, and hair are composed largely of proteins. Different proteins comprise these organs, and if the amount of proteins becomes compromised due to severe deficiency, there will be observable effects.
Collagen is one of the most abundant proteins in the body and is responsible for the firmness and pleasant appearance of the skin. As a person ages, collagen production also declines, which leads to joints becoming stiffer. Moreover, the skin begins to sag and loses firmness and tone. If a person doesn’t consume enough protein, they risk the chance of accelerating the effects of skin aging, such as wrinkles, age spots, and other similar side effects.
Meanwhile, among the effects of protein deficiency on hair is brittleness which leads to split ends and dry hair strands. Keratin comprises hair and is one of the fibrous proteins that the body produces. Therefore, if a person doesn’t have enough protein in their diet, they can experience slower hair growth, and their appearance also suffers as the hair becomes dull and lifeless.
Keratin is also found in nails. A person’s fingers and toenails are part of the skin, and if there’s a significant protein deficiency, the nails will become brittle and deep ridges can manifest.
