Shared Socks
A sock is a garment or a piece of clothing made from soft material that covers the foot and the lower part of the leg. This piece of clothing keeps the feet warm and dry. They also protect the feet from germs and diseases such as athlete’s foot, blisters, and plantar warts. Socks also provide a moisture barrier, absorb sweat, and prevent foul odor because of their absorption properties.
Socks can generally prevent diseases caused by fungi, bacteria, germs, and viruses. But, ironically, they can also be spreading agents of harmful microorganisms. Sharing of used socks can cause the transmission of diseases caused by harmful invaders. For example, the human papillomavirus is a virus that targets the feet, specifically its soles. As the sock contacts the sole of the feet, the existing human papillomavirus is transferred to the sock. When a person borrows a used sock, another direct contact is made, leading to the virus’s transmission.
This is why experts remind everyone, especially athletes, to bring a fresh pair of socks whenever they need to use shared equipment and footwear.
