Thyme Oil
Toothache can be caused by various factors, including gum disease, cavities, and even TMJ. While many over-the-counter treatments are available, some people prefer to use more natural remedies. One such remedy is thyme oil.
The main ingredient in thyme oil is carvacrol. This substance effectively fights bacteria, including the kind that can cause toothaches. In one study, carvacrol was found to be just as effective as chlorhexidine, a common chemical mouthwash ingredient, in reducing plaque and gingivitis.
Carvacrol works by damaging the cell membranes of bacteria. This action disrupts the normal function of the bacteria and ultimately leads to their death. When used in small amounts, thyme oil can help kill the bacteria that cause toothaches without harming the healthy cells in your mouth.
To use thyme oil for toothache relief, add a few drops to a cotton ball and apply it to the affected area. Another method of using thyme oil is to add a few drops to a glass of water and swish it around the mouth for several minutes before spitting it out. Some people like to add a drop or two of thyme oil to their toothbrushes before brushing their teeth as well.
