Cold Compress
A cold compress is an easy and effective way to reduce pain and swelling caused by a toothache. When a person has a toothache, blood flow to the area increases, resulting in inflammation. Ice constricts blood vessels which help reduce inflammation. The numbing effect of the cold can also relieve pain.
To prepare a cold compress to alleviate a toothache, fill a clean, dry cloth with ice cubes and tie it off so that the ice does not fall out. Next, hold the ice compress on the painful area for about 15 minutes. Repeat this process as needed. People can also place a thin towel between the ice and the skin to prevent frostbite. It is important to remember not to apply ice directly to the skin.
Furthermore, an individual suffering from a toothache should use the cold compress for no longer than 15 minutes at a time. It is important to give the skin a break in between to prevent frostbite. If the toothache pain persists, consult a dentist, as it may be a sign of infection or another underlying problem.
