Gargling with Salt Water
Saltwater can eliminate bacterial infection and loosen mucus in the tonsils and nearby areas during osmosis. Osmosis removes the water from the bacteria, eventually killing them. This is why experts recommend that patients gargle with saltwater to temporarily soothe the tickling sensation.
This is also a practical home remedy since it only needs eight ounces of water and a teaspoon of salt. Simply dissolve the salt in warm water. Next, patients are asked to gargle with the salt solution for a few seconds. It is important to note that the solution already contains bacteria and other harmful microbes after gargling, so patients should not swallow it to prevent the bacteria from entering the body. After spitting out the salt solution, wash the mouth with clean water.
This technique is effective for older patients. However, children who do not know how to gargle properly are not advised to do this since it can lead to incidents like inhaling the solution and choking.
