13 Health Benefits Of Green Tea (Is The Hype Real?)

Good for the Heart

Green tea extract contains antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. These properties are essential to fight off oxidative stress and inflammation of arteries which causes high blood pressure. In addition, studies show that green tea has the ability to lower bad cholesterol and triglycerides. Because of these, many researchers dwell on the positive effect of green tea on stroke and heart disease.

A study conducted in Japan shows that adults who drank at least five cups of tea every day for the past ten years have a 25% lower risk of developing heart-related problems and 26% lower risk of dying from stroke or heart attack than people who did not drink green tea. Another study tested the effect of green tea extract in decreasing blood pressure and blood fat levels. The results showed a significant decrease in blood pressure, triglycerides, and LDL or bad cholesterol in participants compared with the placebo group.

Although the data about the potential of green tea to decrease risk factors for cardiovascular diseases is still limited, no severe side effects or harmful reactions were reported among the participants. However, catechins and oxalate found in green tea can cause complications in the liver and kidney when consumed in excessive amounts. Thus, moderate and cautious intake of green tea must be observed to avoid these risks.
