10 Symptoms of Vertigo (Early Signs To Be Aware Of)

Nystagmus

Nystagmus is a medical condition that happens when the eyes make uncontrolled and repetitive movements that often result in in-depth perception issues and reduced vision. Nystagmus can also affect balance, mobility, and coordination and may cause the onset of vertigo in patients. These eye movements can occur from side to side, up and down, or in a circular pattern, making the condition unbearable for the patient and the person trying to speak with them.

Nystagmus can become permanent or can last for only a few seconds. Doctors categorize nystagmus into two: pendular nystagmus and jerk nystagmus. Pendular nystagmus happens when the eye moves back and forth like a pendulum. Meanwhile, jerk nystagmus occurs when one eye drifts slowly to one side and then jerks back to the other direction. The condition causes patients to experience blurry or jumping vision.

Persistent nystagmus can require particular medication, but typically the condition corrects itself through time.
