Mouth Injury or Trauma
A dental injury refers to any damage done to the mouth due to an accident, being hit or falling, and can lead to tooth loss or misalignment and gum problems.
Depending on the severity, bleeding or swelling can occur. Due to the risk of suffocation, severe bleeding needs immediate medical attention. Further bacterial infections can occur since the gums and teeth are exposed. Moreover, a loss of function in the teeth might make it difficult to chew and swallow, which can indirectly affect appetite changes and nutrient deficiencies. Jaw pain might also happen, which can be treated within a few weeks of treatment.
If a mouth or dental injury has happened to a child, choking on the lost teeth can be fatal. Also, whenever feasible, when a child’s permanent tooth has been affected due to injury, it should be re-implanted by gently rinsing it and then taken to the dentist. Sometimes, tooth decay or damage may not be visible after an accident or dental trauma. It is crucial to see a dentist immediately to prevent the development of any complications.
