What Could Trigger Tonsillitis? 15 Possible Causes

Injury

There are a few different ways that injury can lead to tonsillitis. One is if an individual suffers a blow to the head or neck area, resulting in the tonsils becoming displaced. This can happen in sports injuries, car accidents, or any other type of trauma.

If the tonsils are displaced, they may become entangled with other tissues in the area and become swollen and inflamed. In some cases, the displacement may also cause the airway to become blocked, which can lead to difficulty breathing and potentially dangerous consequences.

Injury-related tonsillitis is more likely to occur in people who had their tonsils removed or had radiation therapy to the head and neck area. People with tonsils removed are more likely to experience injury-related tonsillitis because they no longer have the crypts that trap bacteria and other particles. Other medical procedures, such as biopsies or dental work, can lead to post-operative infections that affect the tonsils.

Treatment for injury-related tonsillitis typically involves rest, ice packs, pain medication, and antibiotics if there is evidence of a bacterial infection. Surgery may also be necessary if there is extensive tissue damage or continuous bleeding from the injury site.
