What Could Trigger Tonsillitis? 15 Possible Causes

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)

GERD can cause tonsillitis in two ways: by direct irritation of the tonsils or by indirectly stimulating the immune system. The acid reflux associated with GERD can directly irritate the tonsils, causing them to become inflamed.

Additionally, when stomach acid enters the esophagus, it can trigger a reflex that causes an increase in saliva production. This increase in saliva can contain white blood cells that fight infection and antibodies that help protect against future infections. However, when this mixture of saliva and white blood cells enters the throat through swallowing, it can cause the immune system to overreact and lead to an inflammation of the tonsils, also known as autoimmune tonsillitis.

GERD is diagnosed using a variety of tests, including an upper endoscopy, a procedure in which a small camera is passed down the throat so the doctor can get a close look at the esophagus and stomach. Individuals with GERD will likely be required to make a few lifestyle changes and take medications to ensure proper treatment. These treatments can help reduce the symptoms and may also help prevent tonsilitis.
