What Causes Sunken Eyes? 12 Common Causes (You Should Know)

Dramatic Weight Loss

Excessive or dramatic weight loss typically results in reduced body fat and dehydration. When it happens, the skin becomes translucent, and the blood vessels become more exposed and visible. When combined with the nutritional deficiencies and dehydration associated with drastic weight loss, the exposed blood vessels in the face usually produce dark, hollow eyes, also known as sunken eyes.

Sunken eyes resulting from extreme weight loss may seem simple, but the truth is, it isn’t. According to experts, although weight loss is generally intentional and doesn’t pose much of a threat in terms of health, drastic weight loss amounting to over five percent (5%) of the total body weight usually means that there is a problem, one way or another.

Sunken eyes with drastic weight loss are also attributed to malnutrition and starvation, resulting in nutritional deficiency. In many cases, such conditions result in the appearance of deep, dead space resulting in sunken eyes. It could also mean digestive problems or other autoimmune disorders that may be impossible to identify without visiting a doctor.
