Reaction to Certain Scents or Odors
Certain scents or odors may cause irritation which will trigger body responses. The sensitivity of people in perceiving odors differs from one another. Some people cannot tolerate smells or odors such as perfumes, food, cigar smoke, fecal matter, and sweat. Moreover, the ability of people to identify the scent varies on different factors such as sex, age, and if they are a smoker.
The reaction of people to scent or odor also varies. Some can resist the urge to vomit, while others sneeze and cough in response to the odor. The tolerance for the smell also differs from one another. Some may manifest health problems due to these. In addition, chemicals from the scent may cause health issues. Some may cause burning sensations, wheezing, coughing, and nausea.
Nausea happens when mucous membranes are irritated. It stimulates and triggers pathways of the vomiting center. When the vomiting center is disturbed, the body responds, leading to vomiting. This is the body’s first line of defense against irritating odors.
