Thyroid Disorders
Thyroid disorders can have a variety of causes and vary widely in symptoms. Thyroid conditions are the most common endocrine disorder, affecting nearly 17 million Americans. In hypothyroidism, the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormones. The thyroid gland also produces too many thyroid hormones. Thyroid disorder symptoms include fatigue, weight gain, difficulty concentrating, hair loss, and irregular menstrual cycles.
Being deficient in iron can cause symptoms very similar to a thyroid disorder. Iron is an essential part of hemoglobin, transports oxygen throughout the body. Low iron can lead to low energy levels, poor concentration, and disease resistance. If someone experiences these symptoms, they should see a doctor for proper diagnosis and treatment.
Meanwhile, a goiter is an enlarged thyroid gland caused by hyperthyroidism or underactive thyroid function. If a patient has a goiter and is diagnosed with hypothyroidism (too little hormone), treatment may include surgery or medication to remove or shrink the goiter. This ensures minimizing its effects on other organs while they receive replacement hormone therapy through pills or shots daily for life.
