Low Blood Pressure (Hypotension): 9 Early Signs and Symptoms

Dizziness or Lightheadedness

Another common low blood pressure symptom is dizziness or lightheadedness. This symptom is more likely present among elderly patients and usually occurs when they suddenly stand up from sitting or lying down.

In this case, dizziness or lightheadedness is a symptom of one common type of low blood pressure called orthostatic hypotension. During sudden changes in the body’s posture, such as from sitting to standing, the blood vessels will normally constrict or narrow to ensure that blood pressure and a steady supply of oxygenated blood to the brain are maintained. However, the blood vessels of those with orthostatic hypotension do not constrict, which causes a drop in blood pressure and results in dizziness and lightheadedness.

Orthostatic hypotension, known also as postural hypotension, is not considered a disease in itself but is usually the result of some underlying disorders. Common causes include fever, excessive amounts of alcohol, prolonged bed rest, dehydration due to vomiting or diarrhea, medications such as antihypertensive and diuretics, arrhythmia, and certain conditions, such as diabetes, anemia, adrenal insufficiency, and varicose veins. However, it is best to consult a doctor if the dizziness persists or becomes more severe and frequent with time.
