Inability to Urinate
Being unable to urinate is one of the top symptoms of kidney stones. A kidney stone is a hard piece of material that forms in one of your kidneys. This pain and pressure are caused by the blockage of urine or blood, causing the kidney to swell. As the kidney swells and becomes more painful, it can cause you to have trouble urinating.
Most kidney stones are small enough to pass through the urinary tract without a person even knowing they have them. However, some—especially those that are large—can block urine flow, causing intense pain and possibly an infection in the kidneys. The area between the anus and genitals is known as the perineum, and because it’s the pathway for urine and feces to travel through the body, it’s also where many kidney stones lodge themselves. When this happens, a person may experience an inability to urinate at all.
