Early Signs Of Keto Flu: 12 Symptoms

Rashes

A skin rash, typically called “keto rash,” is occasionally brought on by a ketogenic diet. Keto rash is referred to medically as prurigo pigmentosa. The unique feature of the keto rash is the network-like patterns it creates on the skin. The upper body is generally affected.

The majority of reports of keto rash have come from Japan, and until 2011, there were only 40 cases documented from other countries. This can be due to Western doctors’ lack of familiarity with the condition. The keto rash manifests on the skin as elevated, red, itchy papules.

The chest, back, and neck are the upper body areas where the rash appears more frequently. Although scientists are unsure of the precise cause of skin inflammation from a ketogenic diet, they think ketosis may be related to this rash.

Several medications and lifestyle changes can help alleviate symptoms. For instance, eating more carbohydrates usually resolves keto rashes caused by ketosis, as it brings the body outside of ketosis. In diabetic patients, administering insulin can help reduce keto rashes. Additionally, research points to the possibility of treating keto rash symptoms with antibiotics such as minocycline or tetracycline.
