Hypersomnia

Hypersomnia is the hypersensitive or heightened olfactory sense linked to different health conditions. Those who develop this condition experience significant discomfort from specific smells. There are even instances where some have fallen ill. Exposure to some chemical odors, such as cleaning products, perfumes, and synthetic fragrances, can also trigger discomfort and vary in severity of the discomfort. Even certain shampoo scents can be overwhelming.
The condition can be triggered by various symptoms associated with different conditions, like pregnancy, menopause, migraines, Lyme disease, autoimmune diseases, neurological disorders, allergies, sterile meningitis, diabetes, Cushing syndrome, B-12 deficiency, and medications. In addition, there’s a possibility of a genetic predisposition to hypersomnia. However, more studies are required to say if this is the case conclusively.
While chewing gum or sucking on candies can provide short-term relief, treatment for hypersomnia usually involves finding and treating the triggers of the condition. Addressing the medical issue behind it should alleviate the hypersensitivity to smell. It’s best to work with a medical practitioner to identify the cause successfully. For example, if a tumor or polyp causes your hypersomnia, their surgical removal may alleviate the symptoms and cure your hypersomnia.
