Apply Ice
Some may be alarmed when even after the cramps, the muscles still hurt. This is no cause for alarm as it is completely normal. Muscle tenderness and soreness usually stay until 24 hours since the leg cramp occurred. To reduce the pain from the aftereffects of leg cramps, minimize movement on the affected leg and apply ice to help speed up the recovery.
During this period of tenderness and soreness, applying an ice pack to the affected area can help reduce the pain felt. This will stimulate blood circulation and relieve any possible swelling in the area to promote faster recovery.
Though ice can help with pain management and recovery, timing also plays a crucial role. It is important to remember not to apply ice or anything cold to the area while the cramps are happening. This may cause the muscles to continue contracting instead of relaxing them. Instead, applying heat is recommended while the cramps are occurring. Once the pain subsides and the cramps stop, ice may be applied to reduce the soreness.
