Chamomile
Another natural home remedy for insomnia is chamomile, particularly its flowers. For centuries, herbalists have used chamomile as a gentle sleep agent. Much research is showing its sedative effects that look promising for treating insomnia. Although how the sedative effect of chamomile happens is still unknown, what’s certain is that its effect is due to γ – aminobutyric acid (GABA), the major inhibitor messenger in the central nervous system.
People use chamomile oil as a sleep inducer and mild tranquilizer to calm the nerves, help with relaxation, and ease headaches. As mentioned earlier, it targets the areas in the nervous system and brain that drugs used for anxiety also aim for. Aside from that, it also minimizes pain and aches.
Chamomile tea is another way to use chamomile as a home remedy for insomnia. Drinking tea alone is relaxing. When added with the calming effects of chamomile, it helps the body and mind relax. The flavonoid apigenin contained in chamomile provides its calming effect. However, some individuals are allergic to chamomile, although the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recognizes it as a generally safe product.
