12 Effective Gingivitis Home Remedies You Should Try

Guava Leaf Mouthwash

Guava leaf is used as a treatment in several countries like India and China. It has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties that help fight infections and kill germs. Guava contains tannins, flavonoids, polyphenols, and carotenoids. Tannins have bacterial properties, which is evident in their ability to pass through the bacterial cell wall to the internal membrane. It interferes with the metabolism of the cell, which results in its destruction. Flavonoids are also well-known antibacterial agents against a wide range of pathogenic microorganisms.

On the other hand, polyphenols are known as antibacterial and antioxidant. They benefit the gums in curing gingivitis. Lastly, carotenoids are fat-soluble and are also rich in antioxidants. All of these components contribute to the efficacy of guava leaf as a mouthwash to treat gingivitis.

Due to its properties, guava leaf mouthwash can reduce gum inflammation, relieve gum pain, and freshen the breath. To use this, crush five to six tender guava leaves with a mortar and pestle. Add the crushed leaves to one cup of boiling water. Simmer the guava solution for 15 minutes. Allow the concoction to cool, and add a small amount of salt. Swish the solution in the mouth for 30 seconds.
