Calendula Mouthwash
Pot marigold or calendula is an herb commonly known for its medicinal effect. It has an excellent anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, anti-fungal, and wound-healing effect. In addition, studies show that calendula or marigold flowers effectively combat 23 strains or kinds of Candida yeast, a known fungus that can cause oral infection.
Calendula or marigold is also used to prevent the growth of a leishmania parasite. This parasite produces certain diseases that contribute to the emergence of sores and sensitive gums. Because of this, many experts ventured into the possible potential of calendula in treating other conditions like gingivitis. For example, a study showed that calendula effectively fights gingivitis when used as a mouthwash.
One of the easiest ways of making homemade calendula mouthwash is by adding calendula flowers and sea salt to a liter of boiling water. Some may suggest adding more herbs like peppermint, star anise, cinnamon sticks, and fennel seeds to make the mouthwash tastier. Let the herbs steep for half an hour, then strain the mixture to separate the herbs from the liquid. Let the liquid cool down before adding and dissolving ¼ teaspoon of sea salt. Use the mixture as a mouthwash to relieve gum pain caused by gingivitis.
