Oregano Oil
Derived from various components of the herb it’s named after, oregano oil remains an effective and popular home remedy for fever blisters. For centuries, people in the Mediterranean have used this herbal medicine as a treatment option for ailments, including skin sores, aching muscles, asthma, cramping, diarrhea, indigestion, and colds. It’s also been shown to reduce the size and inflammation of cold sores, thanks in no small part to its potent antibacterial properties.
The essential oil’s main components are thymol and carvacrol. In a laboratory study, these components had prevented different Staphylococcus aureus bacterial strains from growing and developing in dairy products and meat, showing evidence that it may be able to control the growth of bacteria. And amid the increasing concerns regarding the growing resistance of diseases against antibiotics, research shows oregano oil has considerable antibacterial activity against eleven microbes, indicating that it may fight off illnesses that antibiotics no longer can.
To use oregano to treat cold sores, apply diluted oil to a piece of cotton ball and gently put it on any areas that have fever blisters. Do this several times throughout your day and continue the treatment until all the blisters have healed completely.
