Peppermint Oil
Peppermint is a herb within the family of mint. It’s an aromatic hybrid between watermint and spearmint. While known for its distinctively sharp and refreshing odor, its benefits extend beyond its flavor. For starters, research shows its oil extract can help treat IBS, a long-term gastrointestinal condition whose symptoms include diarrhea, abdominal pain, and constipation. How it eases the symptoms remains unknown, but researchers believe it can soothe GI tract muscles and its anti-inflammatory properties.
The herb also has antimicrobial properties, with studies showing its potential as a therapeutic method for specific infections. It may also be effective against herpes simplex and may aid in reducing recovery time for fever blisters. However, further studies are required to determine how effective peppermint can be against bacteria. Also, peppermint oil must never be taken orally, as it may lead to vomiting, nausea, and heartburn.
Topical use and aromatherapy are generally safe and come with minimal risk. But keep in mind that it could be dangerous to specific animals. Dosage is also necessary because the oil may become toxic in large doses.
