Helps in Cancer Prevention
In cancer, cell growth is uncontrollable, and according to several studies, turmeric’s curcumin content affects many forms of cancer. Curcumin has been one of the beneficial herbs that many researchers studied in their continuing search for cancer treatment. The results show that curcumin affects the development and growth of cancer cells. In one study focusing on colorectal cancer in men, for example, the participants showed a reduction in the number of lesions in their colon.
On the other hand, several studies have shown that turmeric plays a role in cancerous cell deaths, reduction of the growth of new blood vessels in tumors (angiogenesis), and a reduction in the spread of cancer (metastasis). Further research involves using piperine with curcumin, which enhances the absorption of curcumin. Piperine is an alkaloid found in black pepper that aids in nutrient absorption. Piperine can boost the absorption of turmeric’s health benefits. The body absorbs turmeric poorly because it is fat-soluble, while the environment in the digestive system is more watery. Thus, the body excretes most of the turmeric, reducing its efficacy.
