Insomnia is a sleeping disorder wherein you struggle to remain or fall asleep. The condition may either be acute or chronic. It’s also not uncommon to experience infrequent bouts of insomnia, lasting from a single night to weeks. However, it’s generally considered a chronic condition if it occurs multiple times a week for three months at least. Insomnia is categorized into two types: secondary and primary. The former means that a pre-existing health condition is causing the problem, while the latter isn’t. 

The causes of insomnia can range from stress, lights, and noise to changes in sleeping schedules and genetics. Mental health problems, pain or discomfort, smoking, caffeine, hyperthyroidism, sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome, dementia, and many others can cause it too. There’s also a possibility that it may cause fibromyalgia, although it can also be a symptom of the condition. But those unable to get quality sleep and often feel exhausted can have significantly elevated pain levels, suggesting that insomnia may contribute to or exacerbate some of the symptoms of fibromyalgia.
