Over-the-counter Medications
Several over-the-counter medications can help to treat diarrhea symptoms. If diarrhea is accompanied by pain, cramping, or bloating, over-the-counter antispasmodic medications may be helpful. These medications work by relaxing the smooth muscles of the intestine and can provide relief from symptoms. These include loperamide and bismuth subsalicylate.
Loperamide works by slowing down the movement of the intestine, which helps to reduce the number of bowel movements. Loperamide, as a home remedy for diarrhea, is best for short-term use and is not recommended for children under 18.
Bismuth subsalicylate can also help to reduce the number of bowel movements and ease symptoms of diarrhea. However, it is essential to note that bismuth subsalicylate can cause black stools. This side effect is harmless and will disappear once the medication is stopped. Bismuth subsalicylate should not be used by children under the age of 12.
These over-the-counter medications are generally safe and effective but can cause side effects. Speaking with a doctor before taking any medications, particularly if one is pregnant or breastfeeding, is also recommended. Medications should be used as directed and only for the recommended duration. Long-term use of loperamide can lead to constipation and other side effects.
