Coffee enemas can lower blood pressure, although medical experts believe it’s an offshoot of the process. Coffee contains methylxanthines, caffeine, theophylline, and theobromine, and these substances provide several benefits. However, it can also pose some risks depending on the amount consumed. Although caffeine can spike blood pressure temporarily, theophylline and theobromine have been determined as vital substances that help ease blood pressure.
Theophylline and theobromine act as vasodilators, making the blood vessels expand and letting more blood pass through easily. Vasodilation allows the heart to relax and pump comfortably, decreasing blood pressure. Theobromine and theophylline also act as muscle relaxants, making the heart and the intestines feel much better and allowing blood to flow more freely.
However, doctors warn against the potential adverse effects of an overdose of theophylline and theobromine. They believe that too much coffee enemas could result in abdominal or stomach pain, blurred vision, confusion, and dark-colored urine, among other things. Doctors also say that side effects are muscle spasms, irregular heartbeat, muscular stiffness, and numbness in the arms, lips, and hands. So although coffee enemas can provide positive effects, it’s better to err on the side of caution.
