Conjunctivitis
A relatively common eye condition, conjunctivitis is one of the common causes of blurry eyesight. Also known as pink eye, it is characterized by the inflammation of the conjunctive or the transparent membrane lining the eyelid.
The common symptoms of conjunctivitis are eye redness, itching, discharge, tearing, and a gritty feeling on the affected eyes. If there is already blurring involved, there has been a complication. As such, it is essential to consult a physician as soon as possible.
The causes of conjunctivitis include allergies, exposure of the eyes to toxic substances or irritants, a foreign object in the eye, and bacterial or viral infection. The cause should be identified promptly to provide the proper treatment. For example, if it is an allergy, the solution is to take an antihistamine. Remove objects stuck in the eye gently to avoid damaging other parts of the eyes.
Bacterial and viral infections should be ascertained since they are contagious. Bacterial conjunctivitis is treated with antibiotics, while there are no treatments for the viral type. The viral infection usually goes away on its own as the body’s immune system adapts to the virus.
