Carbohydrates
A bloated belly is mostly a digestive issue. It’s about the daily dietary intake and how the digestive system reacts to it. Carbohydrates are the body’s fuel to keep going, used quickly as soon as ingested. But a significant load at once could retain water in the body and cause bloating in the stomach. This is especially true with simple carbs, or those food types that enter the bloodstream almost instantly, like pastries, white bread, pasta, and white rice. Complex carbohydrates found in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains take longer to get to the blood because they need time to digest. That’s why eating complex carbs is preferred.
Some people may also have a condition known as carbohydrate intolerance, which happens when the body is unable to effectively break down carbs, leading to fermentation by the gut bacteria that let off gas.
A sudden increase in fiber-rich food intake of complex carbs can also cause bloating due to digestive distress and gas.
The best way to deal with carb-induced bloating is to determine the types bringing about the problem through the guidance of a medical professional.
