10 Recommended Treatments for Binge Eating Disorder: List

Antidepressants

One example of an antidepressant is fluoxetine (Prozac), a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) approved by the FDA to also treat bulimia. Bulimia is an eating disorder characterized by post-binge purging. Insomnia, dry mouth sweating, stomachache, tiredness, and sexual dysfunction are some side effects of SSRIs.

Like Lisdexamfetamine, it is also paramount that a doctor or a physician prescribes it. Discontinuation syndrome, or withdrawal, can be brought on by suddenly stopping the medicine. A patient may faint, be sleepy, and be sick. It is strictly advisable to talk to a doctor first if one decides to stop taking SSRI, so the doctor may progressively reduce the dosage. Even doing this sometimes still results in withdrawal symptoms.

Antidepressants are thought to function by restoring chemical imbalances, or neurotransmitter imbalances, in the brain. However, their specific mechanism of action is still unclear. Many BED patients also have other mental health issues, including anxiety and depression. Therefore these may also be treated with extra drugs. It’s unclear how this helps prevent binge eating, but it might have something to do with how they alter particular brain chemicals linked to one’s mood.
