Rust-colored Bloodstains
Bed bug bites typically have flat and seed-like shapes, but they transform into round and bloated insects after sucking blood. They usually get away from biting the host since their bites are painless, but they don’t always get away unharmed. Sometimes, the host moves or shifts position while sleeping, crushing or squeezing the bed bugs while they are feeding.
These sudden movements may not kill the bed bugs, but they are enough to leak or spill some of the blood they sucked. In addition, the dried blood leaves behind noticeable rust-colored or dark stains. So, mysterious blood stains on bedsheets, pillows, or clothes may indicate the presence of bed bugs. Sometimes, blood may also come out directly from bitten areas. Since bed bug saliva prevents blood from clotting because of its anticoagulant property, the bitten regions may continue to bleed even after the bed bugs finish sucking blood.
Seeing a cluster of tiny blood stains in the morning can freak anyone out. This is a common sign of bed bug infestation that a person might look at after spending a night in a hotel, cruise, or another person’s palace. Identifying this sign can help in the prevention of bringing bed bugs home.
However, it would be best to check for other probable causes before assuming that blood smears or splotches are caused by bed bug infestation.
