Balanitis can also be an effect of a bacterial infection. A bacterial infection happens when a certain amount of harmful bacteria enters the human body and multiplies. Bacteria can enter the body in several ways. For example, an open wound from a simple bug bite or cut can be an entryway to harmful bacteria. The accumulation of these harmful bacteria may lead to inflammation and irritation of the affected regions.
Bacterial infection can also be transmitted through sexual intercourse. Sexually transmitted diseases like syphilis, herpes, chlamydia, warts, and gonorrhea may lead to severe cases of balanitis. Patients can experience pain during urination and sexual intercourse, discomfort, and may have sores or blisters in their genitals.
Doctors usually prescribe antibiotics to fight balanitis caused by bacterial infection. Amoxicillin, a type of penicillin, is usually the go-to medicine for bacterial infections. However, patients allergic to penicillin could take clarithromycin or erythromycin. There are also antibacterial creams that a patient can use for external swellings. However, a patient should consult a medical professional before taking any antibiotics.
