Overweight and Obesity
Obesity and overweight are defined as excessive or abnormal fat accumulation in the body. A person is considered overweight if he has a BMI or body mass index of over 25. Obese people have over 30 BMI. In general, overweight and obesity are caused by overeating unhealthy food and lack of physical activities or exercise. Genetics, mental condition, stress, lack of sleep, and certain medications can also cause obesity.
Obesity also increases the risk of a person developing diabetes. Overeating means having a lot of glucose circulating in the body, which makes it harder for the body to process. BMI, or body mass index, strongly connects insulin resistance and diabetes. People who are overweight and obese have higher levels of cytokines, hormones, glycerol, fatty acids, and other substances that promote insulin resistance.
Because of these reasons, studies show that overweight and obese people are more prone to having balanitis. This is because the excess blood sugar goes to the urine, which is then trapped in the glans and foreskin. In addition, bacteria and other microorganisms need a sugar-rich environment to thrive, resulting in infection and inflammation. Additionally, people who are overweight and obese also deal with excess layers of fats, making it difficult for them to clean their bodies thoroughly.
