What Causes Yellow Teeth? 14 Common Causes (You Should Know)

Excessive Fluoride Consumption

Excessive fluoride consumption can lead to the development of yellow teeth. Fluoride is often found in toothpaste and mouthwashes, which are used to prevent tooth decay. Unfortunately, this excess fluoride can also cause an increase in the amount of dental fluorosis, which causes the yellowing of the teeth.

Dental fluorosis is not permanent and will eventually disappear once the teeth are replaced. However, fluoride is also found naturally in water sources such as wells and natural springs, which may be why most of the population has some degree of dental fluorosis.

Fluoride is very difficult for the body to eliminate on its own and must be done through diet changes or supplements. One way to reduce the amount of fluoride you take from everyday products is to switch to toothpaste containing less fluoride (around .25% instead of 1%). You could also take supplements like calcium or vitamin C, which help remove fluoride from your system. If you’re still concerned about yellow teeth and don’t want to change your diet or take supplements, switch from tap water to bottled water or filtered water which is often lower in fluoride than tap water.
