Poor Hygiene
Many factors can cause yeast infections, but generally, they result from a breakdown in proper hygiene. Yeast is a naturally occurring fungus most commonly found in warm, moist areas of the body. Because of this, yeast often proliferates in areas with excess moisture. When yeast builds up under the skin, it can cause irritation and itching, leading to infection if bacteria are present. If you have been constipated or have worn tight clothing or underwear for long periods, or have experienced hot flashes as a result of menopause, you may be more susceptible to yeast infections.
To prevent a yeast infection, it is important to maintain personal hygiene by washing your genital area frequently with warm water and drying it gently after washing. It is also very important to wear cotton underwear as synthetic fabrics keep moisture close to the skin and make you more susceptible to yeast infections. If you have diabetes or need to take antibiotics for more than two weeks in a row, make sure you talk to your doctor about changing your diet because both of these conditions may alter the balance of bacteria in your body, causing an overgrowth of yeast.
