Diabetes is a serious condition that can have lasting and damaging effects on the body. One of the more common side effects associated with diabetes is known as white tongue, a condition in which the lining of the mouth appears white, is caused by a buildup of bacteria. This bacteria can come from various sources, including cavities or certain types of medication.
When blood sugar levels become erratic and out of balance, small sores form in the mouth in reaction to the bacteria and can appear as white patches on your tongue, giving it a grayish appearance. You may also develop white patches on your gums, which look similar to plaque buildup.
