Contact Dermatitis
Contact dermatitis is an allergic reaction on the skin caused by a foreign substance. It is characterized by redness and irritation of the affected area, and it is most commonly caused by exposure to an ingredient in cosmetics or household products. The vulva, or external female genitalia, can be affected by contact dermatitis just like any other part of the body. This can result in vulvar pain and many other symptoms, including burning, itching, irritation, and swelling. In addition, contact dermatitis can be triggered by physical irritants such as rough clothing or washing detergents.
The area affected by contact dermatitis becomes inflamed and irritated. When the skin covering the vulva becomes inflamed, it can become tender or itchy. If the rash develops on or around the clitoris, it may be painful to touch or rub against clothing or bedding. Scratching the rash can make this worse by introducing bacteria into the sore and spreading the infection that can cause swelling and further irritation, increasing pain and burning during urination and sex. Some women also experience pelvic pain from bladder infections due to an inflamed vulva.
