What Are The Triggers Of Vulvar Pain? 14 Common Causes

Neurologic Disorders

Vulvar pain is a common symptom of neurologic disorders like multiple sclerosis (MS) and Parkinson’s. Various neurological disorders may cause vulvar pain, but the underlying mechanisms are still poorly understood.

In MS patients, autonomic dysfunction can lead to altered blood flow in pelvic organs and sexual dysfunction. In Parkinson’s disease, the autonomic nervous system is also altered; however, the specific neurologic mechanisms involved remain unknown. The vulvar pain symptoms in patients with these diseases can be triggered by normal sexual activity or suddenly occur during sleep (nocturnal dysaesthesia).

The pain can be constant or intermittent, ranging from burning and stinging to sharp jabs and shooting pains. Patients with MS and Parkinson’s disease may also experience bladder problems and urinary incontinence. In addition, there is evidence that neuropathic pain occurs in MS patients and contributes to functional disability.
