Lichen Planus
Lichen planus is a chronic inflammatory autoimmune disease of the skin, and one of its many forms involves the vulva. Lichen planus occurs when the body’s immune system attacks the skin in various ways. It may cause thickened patches on the skin, streaks or lines of discoloration, and itching or burning sensations.
The symptoms vary depending on where the disease affects those with lichen planus. They often include pain in various locations, such as a round, mouth, or vulvar area. Unfortunately, the cause is not fully understood, and there is no cure for lichen planus. Treatments exist to help ease symptoms and prevent flare-ups, but they can be hard to find and expensive.
