Many people are surprised to learn that there is a link between vitamin D deficiency and hair loss. While hair loss can be caused by several factors, such as genetics, stress, and certain medical conditions, vitamin D deficiency is one of the lesser-known causes of hair loss.
Vitamin D plays an important role in maintaining healthy hair follicles. When someone doesn’t have enough vitamin D, their hair follicles can become miniaturized. This means that they produce smaller and thinner hairs over time.
In addition, vitamin D deficiency can lead to an increase in inflammation throughout the body. Inflammation has also been linked to hair loss. In fact, one study showed that people with alopecia areata, an autoimmune condition that causes patchy hair loss, had significantly lower levels of vitamin D than those who did not have the condition.
While more research is needed to confirm a causal link between vitamin D deficiency and hair loss, the evidence suggests that maintaining adequate levels of this nutrient is important for healthy hair.
