Asthma
Over the past few years, there has been a growing body of evidence linking vitamin D deficiency to several chronic health conditions, including asthma. One of the most compelling pieces of evidence comes from a study that found that children who take vitamin D supplements are half as likely to develop asthma as those who do not.
There are several mechanisms by which vitamin D may exert its effects on asthma. One of these is by reducing inflammation. Vitamin D has been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects on the airways, which may help reduce asthmatic attacks’ severity. Additionally, vitamin D may help to boost the immune system, which could help to reduce the frequency of viral infections, one of the common triggers of asthma attacks.
Several studies have looked at the link between vitamin D and asthma, and the results are promising. One study found that children who were given a daily dose of vitamin D supplements significantly reduced the number of wheezing episodes and asthmatic symptoms. Another study found that increasing vitamin D levels in asthmatic children was associated with improved lung function and reduced use of rescue inhalers.
