Prevents Respiratory Infection
Respiratory tract infections affect body parts used in breathing, such as the lungs, airways, throat, and sinuses. Bacteria or viruses may cause the infection. A respiratory infection caused by bacteria like pneumonia may require a visit to your GP, as an antibiotic is usually prescribed for treatment. However, a virus infection, like the common cold, often goes away by itself with proper rest. An antibiotic will not work for this type of respiratory infection since a virus and not bacteria cause it. However, over-the-counter medicines are available to help treat colds, coughs, or flu.
Vitamin C intake is often recommended to prevent respiratory infection and speed up the healing process. However, some studies found a possible correlation between vitamin D and the prevention and treatment of respiratory infections. For instance, a research study found that those with a low vitamin D level were more at risk of respiratory infection. However, if symptoms persist longer than usual, consult your doctor for proper treatment. Moreover, those who are pregnant, over 65 years old, or with existing medical conditions should go to their GP immediately at the first sign of respiratory infection.
