Helps Fight Obesity
More research is needed on the effect of vitamin D in fighting obesity. However, some studies showed impressive results regarding weight loss. A study performed on subjects that took vitamin D supplements and a placebo revealed that the group that took vitamin D supplements lost more weight compared to the placebo group. Another study did not show a significant weight loss in the participants, but it showed a noteworthy decrease in their body fats. Vitamin D may also limit weight gain, as shown in a study made on older women. This study lasted for over four years, and researchers visited the participants to monitor their weight and thus the result.
The researchers stated that the correlation between taking sufficient vitamin D and weight loss, lower body fat, and limited weight gain is due to the vitamin’s effect on serotonin. It increases the production of this chemical that helps regulate every body function, from sleep to mood. Having enough sleep and a better mood can help prevent weight gain. It can also increase the level of testosterone in men, which boosts metabolism, thus burning calories faster.
