There might be a connection between vitamin D and depression because researchers found that many people who suffer from depression also have low vitamin D levels in their blood. So, pregnant women must ensure they have the right nutrients, including sufficient vitamin D intake, for their physical and mental health during and after pregnancy.
Since people with low vitamin D may suffer from physical health problems like bone and muscle weakness, it may prevent them from doing physical and outdoor activities, so they may feel isolated. It could contribute to depression and loneliness. Moreover, some symptoms of vitamin D deficiency are similar to those of depression, like mood changes, anxiety, sleeping difficulties, and fatigue. Besides increasing the intake of vitamin D, it’s also recommended to consult a mental health professional if it’s hard to manage depression. People should take it seriously because it could lead to self-harm or even suicide without proper intervention.
