Contains Antioxidant Properties
Vitamin A has antioxidant properties as well. Antioxidants are substances that may protect the cells from the effects of free radicals, which are molecules produced by the body when it digests food or is exposed to tobacco smoke or radiation. They are found in food, plants, and spices. Antioxidants include carotenoids, cysteine, flavonoids, flavones, inositol hexaphosphate, lipoic acid, and selenium.
Antioxidants benefit health by slowing the aging process, preventing cancer, and reducing the risk of heart disease and neurodegenerative diseases. They neutralize harmful oxidants or prevent them from damaging cells by combining with them and rendering them inactive. Natural antioxidants include vitamins C and E, beta-carotene, and selenium. Synthetic antioxidants are present in a wide variety of foods, including fruits and vegetables, cereals, and spices.
Additionally, antioxidants have been proven to reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) by 77 percent, according to a study published in “Ophthalmology.” Age-related macular degeneration, or AMD, is a condition where the eye’s retina deteriorates, causing blurry vision and eventual blindness. The disease primarily affects people over the age of 60 years but can also occur in people under the age of 60. Other risk factors include consuming a high-saturated-fat diet, smoking, and hypertension.
