Fullness in the Ear
Ear fullness is the condition where the person feels that there is a blockage inside the ear. The condition leads to the person hearing muffled sounds or ripping and cracking sounds inside their ear. The sensation of congestion can last from a few seconds, but can also persist for up to a few days, depending on the severity of the condition. The feeling of congestion can also directly affect the vestibular organs, which help with the body’s balance. Such a sensation can also lead to an episode of vertigo.
Common causes of ear fullness or congestion include hay fever, allergies, over-excessive nose blowing, and fluid in the middle ear. Ear infections can also cause pain due to infections. Sudden changes in barometric pressure can also trigger the sensation, especially when traveling via plane, riding in an elevator, or hiking. Doctors recommend swallowing to pop the ears during an airplane descent or use a nasal spray an hour before travel to reduce the possibility of ear congestion.
