Sitting and Standing
Sitting and standing can help relieve vertigo by encouraging blood flow through the ears. In people with vertigo, the inner ear’s balance mechanism has become hyperactive, sending continuous and sometimes confusing signals to the brain. This signals confusion can be helped by a process called equilibration. For example, when you turn your head in one direction, fluid in the inner ear sloshes back and forth, stimulating the balance mechanism and sending signals to the brain. But when you remain still in one position, this signal is interrupted.
Getting those signals restarted again helps to take small steps and movements that stimulate the fluid again. For example, sitting up slowly will move fluid around, stimulating balance. Likewise, standing up slowly will allow gravity to move fluid around. Together, these small movements will encourage blood flow through the inner ear and signal your brain that all is well with your balance system.
