Fungal Infections
Have you ever noticed a vertical split in your fingernail and wondered what could have caused it? Chances are, you have a fungal infection. Fungal infections of the nails, also called onychomycosis, are relatively common. It is estimated that 6-8% of the population worldwide suffers from this condition.
Several different types of fungi can cause an infection, but the most common is Trichophyton rubrum. This type of fungus thrives in warm, moist environments. It can be contracted through direct contact with an infected person or animal or by coming into contact with contaminated surfaces such as towels, shower floors, or pools. The fungi can also be transmitted indirectly via personal care products such as nail clippers or emery boards.
Once the fungi have gained access to the nails, they multiply and spread. The nails then become thickened, yellowed, and brittle. In some cases, the nails may even separate from the bed completely. Individuals who notice any of these changes in their nails should see a doctor to receive treatment and avoid further damage.
