Skin Cancers
At first glance, skin cancer and vertical nail splits may not seem to have much in common. However, new research suggests that there may be a link between the two. Skin cancer is the abnormal growth of skin cells. There are three primary types of skin cancer, namely melanoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and basal cell carcinoma. Basal and squamous cell carcinoma are the most common types of skin cancer, and they tend to be less aggressive than melanoma.
Most cases of skin cancer are caused by exposure to ultraviolet radiation from the sun or tanning beds. UV radiation damages the DNA in skin cells, which can lead to the development of skin cancer. People with fair skin, light-colored eyes, and red or blonde hair are at a higher risk for developing skin cancer because they have less pigment in their skin, which offers less protection from UV rays.
New research has found that people with certain types of skin cancer are more likely to develop vertical nail splits. In addition, the study found that people with cutaneous T-cell lymphoma were more likely to develop Beau lines than people without cutaneous T-cell lymphoma. Cutaneous T-cell lymphoma is a type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma that affects the skin.
