Venous Leg Ulcer
In most cases, varicose veins are nothing more than a cosmetic concern. However, in some cases, they can lead to a more serious condition called venous leg ulcers. There is a strong connection between varicose veins and venous leg ulcers. Varicose veins cause about 80 percent of all venous leg ulcers. When left untreated, varicose veins can damage the skin and underlying tissue, leading to venous leg ulcers.
Venous leg ulcers are open wounds when varicose veins damage the skin and underlying tissue. These ulcers are usually located on the inside of the leg just above the ankle. Venous leg ulcers can be painful and slow to heal. In some cases, they can become infected. Infections can delay healing and lead to other complications.
While varicose veins can lead to venous leg ulcers, not all will result in ulcers. Most people who have varicose veins never develop ulcers. However, for individuals with varicose veins and developing an ulcer, it’s important to see a doctor as soon as possible.
